Frame-based Terminology: semantic framing and database structure

YourTerm MARE concerns various domains pertaining to the human event of fishing or the process of extracting resources from the sea.
Since multiple elements make up this process, we are currently conducting research in order to bring together several fields of maritime expertise. This will culminate in a thematic-specific database structure based on the theoretical foundations and practices of Frame-based Terminology.
You can find more information about the semantic framing in the article Frame-based Terminology.
The two tables below are examples of semantic structures.
The first one refers to maritime safety and ship construction and the second to fish species.

YourTerm MARE Projects

Project on Maritime safety and ship construction

Completed tasks

Term extraction and research for equivalents
The Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union and the European Maritime Safety Agency produced a term extraction of 50 relevant terms that kick-started the project.

Researchers from Università Parthenope completed the research for the Italian equivalent for the 50 terms provided by EMSA.

Researchers from at Hellenic American University and University of Vigo have successfully completed the research for the Greek and Spanish equivalent for the 50 terms provided by EMSA.

Ongoing tasks

Validation by experts
Results from researches were sent to experts in EMSA to be validated.

Project on Commercial and scientific names of fish species

Ongoing tasks

Corpus compilation and frame building
In co-operation with the Pablo Olavide University, we are currently compiling a specialised corpus on the field of fishing. This will enable us to design a semantic frame that will be used to define the YourTerm MARE database structure.

Guidelines for terminology research into Commercial fish species names
In co-operation with the Lithuanian Language Unit of the European Parliament, we are currently developing the research process and guidelines for a subproject on commercial fish species names.
